It really depends on your ideas of how you'd like running your site. If you want to expand your activities, probably add to the commercial points, like running ads and selling products, the domain names are better.

I agree with Pro, if you want to appear more professional and be taken serious, a domain name is essential. Now days you can host and get a domain name for $20-$30 a year and run your own blog. I have both kinds and I prefer the self hosted blogs much better.

Domains are so cheap these days, it's hard to find a reason not to do it -- especially if you want to make money off of it.

The only negative I could think of is if your site is already well-established on its subdomain.
