View Full Version : how much does starting a web page cost?
My friend and I are planning on starting a craiglist type webpage, where people and business can post items for sale and people can buy them. we want to be able to have control over how this items appear and have an interactive search and posting system. We have been learning more about the web and what it takes to start a page. How much can we expect a site of this type to cost to get it up and running?

Hi, nice to hear you interested to start your own web.
May I know do you want to create site with shopping cart by yourself or want to outsource to professional to create your site?
We would be a site like craigslist. We would have businesses posting items that people could look at. We would then be able to put the two parties in contact by providing contact information

A web site could be done for free if you code it your self and find a free hosting service. But you get what you pay for.
If you are not going to do your own coding then the expense of paying a programmer could get very high.

Just so you know what you're getting yourself into here, the type of Web site you want will require a lot of programming (it's not a simple matter of creating a design in Photoshop and then whipping up some HTML and CSS to present it to the user). You're going to have to know a few things about Web security, server-side programming and relational database management systems. Server administration will also be a plus.
You can't learn all these things overnight either, so your best bet will be to hire a professional programmer that can do this for you. Make sure the programmer has solid credentials, references and a portfolio of recent work that he or she is not afraid to show you. And always shop around. But when you do, don't shop on the price. Just kick some proverbial tires around and see what the agencies and freelance programmers are charging for this type of project. That will give you an idea of how much this site will end up costing you (as a rule of thumb I'd add up the quotes, then divide them by the number of quotes you received, then multiply that number by 1/3rd to account for any delays that may occur just to be on the safe side).

I think you should hire a freelancer on elance or getacoder to ask them duplicate the craiglist or any site you want, and then you will see the cost ;-)

The quality of the code on those sites will likely be laughable at best. Seriously, avoid those sites, and hire a real professional instead. You'll also be able to avoid the legal issues that webburu's idea would ensnare you in as well.

Hello, I read your question regarding starting a website or something like www.Craigslist.com. I have been in the web development business for approx 12 years. I have worked for Microsoft, MSNBC, and The David Letterman Show. Of course anything is possible, but it really depends on your budget. I would suggest starting simple and very in-expensive. There are several Large Companies out there I would suggest starting with. One Page Web Design (www.1PgWeb.com) or Go Daddy (www.GoDaddy.com). Both companies have OUTSTANDING Customer Service. They are available 24 hours a day and they will walk you through any problem you have.
Of course, they both are two completley different companies as far as the services they offer. Good luck with your idea and I hope this has helped.

Just go on and search for web hosting sites and if you can develop your own webpage, good for you because web hosting cost is not that expensive.

I think that is a great start for building a site.... speaking of a web design, you may code it by your self and that is a free in reality, but if you hire a web developer for you then you may spend a little money for it...

I to am starting a craigslist type site. Perhaps you, tw2 and I, could share some ideas and resources or at least discuss them. You did not mention how far along you are or if you are writing it yourself. It is the search for knowledge that led me here.
