Hey Chris your castle is for sale (http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/05/19/castle.forsale.ap/index.html?eref=rss_topstories) but you better act fast it sounds like it's rare to see a castle for sale in the USA.
a $15 million property joining a small niche of the world's luxury real estate market.
Let's hope he's sold a lot of swords :p

Hmm... "fully finished dungeon" and "its been a private school" in the same article is a little disturbing.
Brings a whole new meaning to detention. :p

Hey that is my kind of place, let's all pool our money and buy it.
It could be the webmaster dungeon ;)
All kidding a side that is one property I would buy if I ha the money. I seen it when visiting the area a while ago and it is awesome.
One would either have to be uber rich or turn it into an upscale hotel and spa to afford the upkeep and taxes.

Heh, I saw that listing already. But it isn't quite what I'd like. I want taller towers and the lowest windows need to be higher off the ground otherwise it doesn't look like a defensible structure. Besides, its in the middle of a town, and I want it on top of a mountain.

Planning on warring against other castles?

You never know... but it just doesn't scream "castle" to me if its got a bunch of low to the ground windows. Then its just a house with grey stone.
When I build my castle I plan to have 2 basements, the first will only be about 4 feet below ground though, and 6 feet above ground. So the first floor will start 6 feet above ground. If we assume the windows start 4 feet above the floor, then the lowest window opening will be 10 feet above the ground. Which should be enough to give it that castle look.
You of course want windows in a castle, natural light is nice, but if you can make it so they start higher off the ground you end up with a much more "castle" like building.
Chris - if I remember correctly - I think you can get in touch with some Scottish Heritage or Government department and actually become a live in care taker of one of the Scottish castles for free for a year... just in case you wanted to try before you buy :)

Chris, here is a castle you could purchase. It's right outside of Lexington, about 20 minutes from me. Last I heard it was up for sale. It did nearly burn to the ground a few years ago but they've redone it. These pics are old ones I believe.

We don't have anything like that here in New York.

This made me chuckle a bit Chris.
I think it's awesome you want to get a castle.
That said, I can honestly say the "defensible structure" requirement didn't quite make our list of must have features when my wife and I bought our current house in the burbs.
To each their own for sure. :D

We nearly go married at Peckforton Castle (http://www.peckfortoncastle.co.uk/)
But the castle was just too cold, even for the middle of summer.
I suspet that could be a major flaw with many castles.
