Since 'tis the season of Google Hysteria, is there another search engine out there that is better?
Is there a true search engine alternative that returns superior relavant results?

AllTheWeb is quite good - but it does have alot of spam results.

I find AltaVista's better at the moment.

What about Teoma?
does anyone know how any of those three search engines mentioned list sites? for backward links like google, or...?

Most search engines use similar ranking algorithms. They all involve incoming links to an extent.

I found gigblast a week ago and submited , my website ( not percept.be ) now ranks on the first 40 results for all my 3 keywords. 2 out of 3 in the first 5 results even.
Probably won't bring much traffic though. ;)

Yes, I also have some jaw-dropping rankings on GigaBlast.

Interesting reading in Gigablast's "About" page- http://www.gigablast.com/about.html
Gigablast is a one-man operation (!).
A quote from the proprietor:
But as far as what is different from the user's perspective, I think Gigablast's scoring algorithms give less emphasis to links as other engines. I did this on purpose so new sites are not at as much a disadvantage as more established sites that have a large number of incoming links. This is why I chose the catch-phrase "Search the web from a different angle" to be displayed on the front page.
Another major difference is that Gigablast is the only large engine, to my knowledge, to ever do continuous updating and refreshing of the index in real-time. You can also add and update your URLs in real-time, too. I think Gigablast is the only large engine right now that allows that. Everybody else charges money and calls it "paid inclusion."
- from this article (http://www.searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/3080321).
He also has a blog (http://www.gigablast.com/rants.html). Ever wonder the trials and tribulations of running an internet search engine? Read that sucker.
From the blog:
I am planning on purchasing the hardware required for achieving a 5 billion document index capable of serving hundreds of queries per second within the next 12 months. Wish me luck... and thanks for using Gigablast.

his site is pretty awesome
May I ask how you found gigablast? Just as i've never heard of it and wondered how small search engines get noticed.

That is rather amazing. One man doing all that. I don't really know what else to say except "egad".
It's also fun seeing how many sites are updated- you can see it in real time by refreshing the front page.

Heh, an interesting way to promote his site:

Too bad Google doesn't add PR if you link to them. :\

Teoma or ask.com has been crawlled my five-months-old site for about 4 months ago. I got no traffic from it until just after Thanksgiving. Now, it accounts for about 5 % or more traffic (just after google and yahoo). Good grief! I've been thinking about banning teoma some months ago because it's using too much bandwidth and crawling months after months doing nothing was weird :D

I've known of GigaBlast for a while now (over a year, atleast). However, to my knowledge, I've never received any traffic from them.
