for instance, if I wanted to buy a domain name that had the term "bluray" in it (for future investment) but since most common bluray TLD's like .com are already taken, should I buy something like mybluray.com. Will it have a negative effect for SEO if it had a "-" in between, like "my-bluray.com"? If any of you were to buy a domain, would you buy the one with the "-" or without it, relying on the fact that your going to be SEO'ing this domain and you want the name to be SE friendly...

There are pros and cons to using hyphens. You can have a successful site going either way.
