Note, I did post this at 5 Star Affiliate forums, but I thought it was very relevant here as well.

I'm always looking for ways to create "grassroots" buzz around my site and a couple of threads in other forums requesting diggs, finally convinced me to give digg.com and subsequently www.beta.netscape.com a try.

I've come to realize that unless you are a "major" online news organization, the odds are very slim that one of your articles would get voluntarily dugg at these sites. In order to really have any hopes of attracting attention, one must first digg their own articles or have someone do it for them.

Simply getting an article listed is not enough. These sites are promoted as democracies where the "best" articles make it to the top by members voting for them. In the U.S. election process it isn't always the best candidate or ballet initiative that wins it is the side that can turn out the most voters that wins. The same is true when it comes to getting dugg. It is the article "promoter" that can turn out the most votes that will rise to the top.

As a result it is important to build up a network of "friends" who will reliably vote for each other's articles/digg listings. One way to build up one's network of "friends" is via forums like this one.

Dugg.com and www.beta.netscape.com, could be good marketing tools for us if we worked together. I propose that we use this thread to give our usernames for those two sites and a link to our profiles to those sites so that members of these forums can add each other to their "friends" list so that we can start voting for each other's postings. Of course we would also to link to our digg listings so that others could more easily vote.

One suggestion I do have is that we make sure we only try to promote our best articles so that we don't simply become a bunch of digg spammers. Also actually reading each other's articles and providing useful comments can help the digging process.

I'll start off :

My Digg.com profile is: http://digg.com/users/KLBP and the article

My Netscape profile is: http://www.beta.netscape.com/member/Kenb/

Happy digging to all.

I'm not saying its a bad idea, its actually the best way to do it; just keep things quiet.

I suspect this is caused by established digging circles trying to block competition. Face it, once you are part of a successful "in" crowd and can score on Digg at will, you don't want others building up the same ability and "beating" you at your own game.

All of the social networking sites are about social politics and social niches. Blogs aren't any different. They might also come down hard on some forums that discuss the dirty secret about digging circles because they want the world to think they are a totally organic and democratic process, yet they are really controlled by those who have the lobbying power of a "special interest" group just like real world democracies.

This is also why I recommend ONLY promoting really high quality articles. I produce a lot of good articles, but would probably only promote the ones that cover a really important issue worthy of being covered heavily by the mainstream press (e.g. my Norwegian salmon article). There are many very good articles produced by small publishers that never get dugg because the site's author is not part of an established digging circle.

Upon further reading of the Sitepoint blog, it might be the best tactic for people to simply link to their user profile here so that we can add each other to our lists of "friends". This way we can keep tabs on each other's postings and vote where appropriate.

Well, I decided to give digg a try. If nothing else it's a fun site to explore.
