Most reliable place to check domain availability?

I normally go to Domain Tools (formally Whois), but they are just pissing me off here lately.

It's happened a lot that every domain I check for says "available" under domain tools, and then I go to try and register it to find out it's already registered. Kinda makes me wonder if some of the ones I'm looking for that say registered, if they really are!

I'm always a little leary of doing that simply because I've read stories of speculation that registars watch what is searched for and when a good one is searched for and not registered they snap it up. Maybe this is true..maybe not.

I dunno .. let's face it, how many good domain names could there still be out there unregistered that the registars would really want to get their hands on.
