I have 2 versions of the same name .com and .net. I wanted to start 2 different sites with these names and promote them with different keywords. The .com is a store and the .net is a forum both on different ips. Is this advisable? Could this cause problems?
Almost forgot... the 2 sites will be crosslinked also.
Why bother seperating?
Why not just hold on to the .net to help protect your name, and develop only the .com.
Can't you just have www.name.com and www.name.com/forums?

1 is a store and my wifes business. The other I wanted to use as a forum.
To answer your original question then, it's fine to do. It's not against any search engine rules or anything.

I don't think there should be a problem in that. Make sure you avoid excessive cross linking as the SEs may penalize your sites for it.
