The only thing .NET has over PHP is a very good base framework and a good IDE. Other than that they are pretty much equal.

Also, there are many more high end web solutions in PHP. Vbulliten, Wordpress, Oscommerce, etc.

OSCommerce and high end in the same sentence

I think a lot of good programs will be in .NET soon.

i agree with you todd. And .net is damn impressive. I cant code in it but my buddy can blow the doors off anything php can do with .net and then some. I am a huge advocate of php since its what i write my code in but ASP seems to be the shiznit.

There are tons of big companies using .net. Dell for one, schwans.com for another.

PHP can do anything .NET can do. Also, about OScommerce. I just ment that it was widely used.

PHP can do anything .NET can do.
except desktop apps. remember that .Net is more than just ASP.Net.

you can also write in numerous languages using .net

.NET is framework. I just used it for simplicity. So yes, it can be used for Desktop Apps and used by different languages.

izwar - are you asking for pros and cons of a site that is written in either php or .net, or do you mean the pros and cons of the language/platforms themselves?

There's plenty of "high end" apps written in .Net. I don't think that necessarily makes one better or less than the other. use what you're comfortable with and what fits the needs of the client/project.

Personally I use .NET becose allows me to get skilled in C# in same time , which is proven to be useful in desktop programming too.
Tough, there is still tons of web in php it seems that future belongs to .net

One major difference that I personally find to be important is that ASP and .Net are vendor specific solutions that require one to use a Windows server. PHP is platform independant and can run on any OS that Apache can run on or it can be run on MSFT IIS servers. One big advantage to this is that a site can be run on a lower profile server like FreeBSD (like my sites are). This can significantly reduce one's exposure to exploitation as the malcontents tend to target their attacks at more popular solutions like Linux and Windows. Also, open source solutions tend to have lower monthly web hosting costs than Windows based hosting solutions.
