Personally I'm in favor of a .xxx domain... but trying to remove all porn from other TLDs would be futile.

Didn't this fall through a few months ago?

icann killed it, but apparently these congressmen are trying to force their hand or something.

Really?
I doubt it'll ever get through. Bush's rampage on the porn industry is still going strong, and I doubt he'll see the xxx domain as anything other than a new evil ploy by porn webmasters to get even more porn on the net.

I like it because I think it'd legitimize porn. When you have an official XXX domain there isn't really much excuse for censoring the Internet anymore, it'll be easy to block if a parent wants to. Not that I run any porn sites, but I know the censorship slope is a slippery one.

Would open a can of worms though. Porn sites would avoid it for those reasons. Then you would have to force them to move. Which could legitimize moving other types of sites. Commercial only to .com, Network only to .net etc. Imagine if NBC was forced to move to nbc.tv :p

Porn sites would avoid it for those reasons. Why would they do that?
I used to run a whole bunch of porn sites and the biggest problem was getting timewasters arriving there.
I don't want kids or someone who isn't interested to be looking at the site because it just munches up bandwidth -> increases my overhead.
Using a .xxx extension would have removed some of that waste.

timewasters = kids no? Adults it would see would have far less free time.

I don't want people just looking at the free images, I want real 'grown ups' who have a credit card so I can sign them up to a 12 month contract (or whatever) - kids *are* a waste of money.

Everyone with "kid" traffic, send it to me, I'll make money off of it and cut you a check for a percentage of it.

Sorry, I should clarify...
Kids *are* a waste of money, in the Porn industry.

This would probably be the most useful TLD category I could think of. IMO it should have come before .info.

sorry, I read this thread too fast ;) I've just heard a lot of people trashing places like myspace saying "kids" don't buy anything thus you can't make money off them.

It's an interesting idea - but how will it work globally? It's all very well saying .xxx sites can only contain porn - but the idea of what porn actually is is something which is contentious depending on country.
The "Sun" website, in the UK for example would undoubtably be considered porn in many countries - even though it is (worryingly) the most read newspaper in the UK (a shoddy rag not worthy of toilet paper for those outside).
When a single country or organisation starts deciding what is and is not morally acceptable, things could well begin to go a little awry in net land :(
Don't get me wrong - as a parent I am not a fan of how easily accessible some stuff is - I'm just not sure the utopian ideal of .xxx tld is going to help much - and potentially could open whole other cans of worms...

I've never really been a fan of this idea. Take the following scenario where some porn king goes a sets up www.microsoft.xxx What happens to legitimate business that gets their name slandered like this? MS is probably a bad example, but what would happen if someone took the .xxx tld for YOUR business domain?

Then you can make them cough it up. What're you going to do if they have the .net and fill that site with "[Company] sucks!"
Personally, I think it'll be beneficial to help some sites establish what they're all about, and will help lighten the load from other TLDs. Basically any new TLD introduced will be beneficial.

I think it would be FANTASTIC! Would make it easier to filter the porn out of systems used by kids.

I was wondering if anyone using this forum made any money from xxx sites. Nobody ever seemed to mention it, so I didn't want to bring it up. But this thread has sort of answered that question. So, is the money better or worse in porn than regular marketing-based sites? Not that i'd be into that, of course...

BTW, I do realize this thread is way old, but I just noticed it.

I tried a few times in the past 8 years but couldn't stay motivated to work on it. I have no personal drive to work on purely adult sites. I even had a great name in a high conversion ratio, hugely growing niche market (adultgames.net), but couldn't stay motivated to develop it. Now it's parked at Sedo.
There are so many problems with having a forced .xxx TLD. I didnt read the proposed ideas so I'm not sure if these issues were answered.
What will happen to the multi-million dollar domains like porn.com, sex.com, etc.?
When it comes to any form of censorship, where do you draw the line? What about the more adult ebaumsworld type sites who have 2 or 3 humorous truly hardcore movie clips in their archive of 5,000? What about the sites that simply have a few hardcore ads to profit off of?
How big of a staff would you need to go all over the internet looking for hardcore content not properly placed on a ".xxx" TLD?
As with all government forced censorship, the first step always seems like a good idea, but then it evolves into removing related freedoms that are complete bull**** (patriot act, obscenity laws).

I like it but only if it is optional and with domains first offered to .com owners (so the owner of sex.com would have first dibs on sex.xxx).
Also, like I said, I think it prevents further censorship by creating a TLD specifically for porn I think you're validating porn in a way.

What does it mean to be "parked at Sedo"? It's just sitting on a host server making little or no money? Not sure if that's an insider thing that I haven't learned yet. Like MFA. While I'm asking questions, what's an MFA site?
Johnny Gulag

MFA - Made for adsense I think
Sedo is a place where you can sell domains/websites and they offer the ability to "park your domain" which means that you are letting them palce their ads on the site while you wait to get offers form interested buyers. I think... ;)
