I know this is not a Joomla Forum but I thought it would be worth giving a little of my experience. A side effect might be that they hit the same problem and that I am not stupid.
I built me Children Webmag site (see signature) using Joomla 1.0.4 and noticed that because of its "itemid" parameter ends up creating multiple urls to identical content. I realised this is a disaster from a SE point of view, seached the forums and found I was not alone. So I hacked until I got single urls to each article. I still have some doubles but that is a lot better than some articles appearing 19 times!
So if you are thinking of building an SE optimised article magazine using Joomla, think about this this make sure you know how to avoid it (and then let me know!) or use something else.
