I'm trying to compile a list of forum posting services for an article.
So far I've got forumelves, boostaforum, and forumlaunch
Any others?

They seem quite a good idea, I think I'll give them a go when my site launches.

How much do they cost? And how do they avoid having such posts regarded (and likely deleted) as spam?

The forums at sitepoint and digitalpoint list a few - for sale. :)

The sites he's talking about are for paying for them to post on your own forums to increase activity. I think you're thinking of sites offering to post on other forums for links? Not sure though..

Both can be seen as spam if abused. I think it's useful when it's not abused or sly.
I've seen forum owers fill up new forums with fake posts, fake the PR, then try to sell a "active" forum.

Chris, another article topic you might be interested in is "Article Writing and Submission Services".
Even textlinkbrokers is getting into the article writing scene. see http://www.textlinkbrokers.com/article_submissions.html

do you people find this works? Do the sites continue to grow or does it just end up being a bunch of crummy posts.

I know in my personal experience the first year or so with a forum its hard to grow.
Especially if you don't have a high traffic site backing it up. There is a critical level of members to be sure, but there is also a critical level of posts.
You need posts because they come up in search results, and they offer an easy way for a new member to contribute by giving them the ability to join an already existing discussion.
The first 1000 posts are the hardest to get, and these services offer an easy way to get past that hurdle.
As for quality and whatnot... well thats what I hope to review in the article.

I'm pretty sure http://www.webmasterlabor.com provides this service, although its not directly mentioned on their site. I would check with them, they are one of two webmaster outsourcing companies that I actually trust.
I interviewed the owner and founder a while ago: http://www.webpublishingblog.com/?p=31

thanks for the feedback guys... I am looking into this for a new site of mine.
I've actually been thinking for the past couple weeks to start offering my services as a forum poster. I doubt I would get any clients but it's worth a shot.
