I have asked this question at the Amazon forums but no one seems to be able to give me a straight answer.
If someone from the UK follows my amazon link to amazon.com, and then they decide to click the UK link on amazon's site. Do i still get credited? Is the cookie a cross domain cookie?

No, the cookie is per domain, per session only, AFAIK.
I have a site which is attracting more Japanese visitors than US at the moment - so if I send them to amazon.com and they decide buy from amazon.co.jp does that mean I will not get the credit?
Does this also mean that to be fully covered, I should join each of the amazon international sites?

I asked amazon about this, and no, if they decide to buy from .co.jp you will not be credited.

And also just joining the various countries program does not mean you will get credit. The cookies are site specific, so send someone to .jp with the correct link is ok, if they then buy from .com, no commission for you :(
So I take it if you send someone to one page on amazon.com and they go to another and buy something, you will still get the credit?

Yes :) Per domain, per session.
If you're getting a lot of Japanese visitors, try tracking them by IP and providing them with amazon.co.jp links instead of .com.

a nice idea would be to have an ip-country database then a script will choose whether what link to fetch if you use Amazon ECS.

Isn't that what I suggested?
