what do you use to serve banner ads ?

phpads ?

i assume if you use like phpads there is a load on the server and depending on the popularity of your site that should eat up a little bit of your resources

wouldnt it be better just to do like a random script ? like with java or something
and just have defaults with your ads companies ?

php ads shouldn't eat up much.

If you use an adnetwork though, like Fastclick, you can manage other campaigns through their interface.
