I was already king for a year, and Sarah totally deserves the Team Leader one, but vote for me on the other two ;)
Will do...
Have done... Do they do any kind of weighting with post count? Or, in theory, could you sign up with a load of new accounts and vote for one person loads of times?

I hate Sitepoint. The vast majority of mods and members there are so totally lame (present company excepted of course!). Their books and other stuff are for complete n00bs too.

:( I own two of their books and like the looks of the others. I guess I'm a "complete n00b".

I own a bunch of their books, and I have to say only the Web Design Business Kit has any sense of completeness to it - the others are seriously wanting.

Everyone's favorite Nintendo spammed the Internet soliciting votes. I'm in 2nd for King but he has double my votes. I'm also 2nd for entrepreneur, but there his lead is only a few (every vote counts). If you haven't voted yet, please do. Normally I don't really care about asking for votes, and I wouldn't care this time, but his attitude has been annoying and the forum as a whole would like to see him upset.

I hope Nintendo chokes.
I think that if he won either, he'd have to be disqualified because it'd be skewed results; they've only elected/voted for him as a joke.

Why does anybody care about Sitepoint titles? Are they of any benefit?

Yeah, I don't really get it either. They're about as accurate as an Alexa ranking ;)

did you see what that bozo tylercruz said on that first link?
I really really hate telling people how much I make because no matter how I phrase it its going to sound like bragging and it could make people jealous and I just don't like doing it..... but man.... I was sorely tempted to tell him how much I grossed last year.

The fact is that Nintendo was only a contender in this because of all the hype at DP. I wouldn't worry about it. You know how much you make and how successful you are, so thats all that matters. If anyone spent some time on this forum they wouldn't dispute that.
Chris

Alot. ;) Although my goal was to gross 7 figures and I didn't hit it, I hope to gross 7 figures in 2006.

Hey Chris,
What do you spend all your money on? Do you have a big *** house worthy of MTV Cribs?!? Lots of cars?!?
Chris
11-13-2005, 03:24 PM
I have one car, but its pretty nice.
My house is decent, 2200 square feet. Its less than 2 miles from a major university though so land values here are pretty high (as are property taxes :( ) nothing like San Francisco though of course. Granite & Quartz counter tops, we're having an all granite shower put in now. Hot tub out back. Mostly we bought the place for it's location.
Mostly I spend my money on investments... though this year I paid out of pocket about 130k for an addition to our house. We were going to finance it but I had enough. 2 years ago though I bought duplexes, the year before that I bought alot of stocks. This next spring I plan to build an apartment building as you know.
Vacations too I guess, spent about 10k this year on 2 trips. But we won't be taking those for awhile as my wife is in medical school.
of course... gross is just that, gross, before expenses and before taxes. So when I say 7 figures gross, its not like I have that much in spending money.

What does an average single family home in your area cost?
Chris
11-13-2005, 08:22 PM
I don't know. The McMansions that are our neighbors to the rear are like 500k

McMansions for 500k LUCKY!
The houses here in Folsom, CA are a LOT. I would say $500k is average maybe 450k. Living near Granite Bay, and El Dorado Hills both $money$ places have driven up houses over the last few years. (even greater than other places).
The house I live in now is ~25yrs old and is valued at around $675k to $700k. This is your average 4bdroom, 2 story, 2 car garage house. It does have a pool, and in ground spa but there is nothign fancy about this house.
I`ve been looking up the hill (in the Sierra Nevadas) for a house w/some land and to get ~10 acres and a 2200sqft or so house it`ll be around 500k. Not to much money for the land you get but houses just are not lage up the hill so you pay for that.
Housing value really depends on the area, and I wishI lived here houses didn't cost so much!!
Mike Hunt
11-13-2005, 08:47 PM
Yeah, $500K for a crappy house in CA, the northeast, or probably FL would be a steal.
Taxes suck too. Every election more taxes get added (property tax increases, sales tax increase, keeping surpluses, etc.). I guess more and more people want to live off the taxpayer.
I knew a guy that lived in the midwest (Gary, Indiana) and he said a decent sized SFH with pool, good-sized yard could be had for $125K.
Chris
11-13-2005, 08:48 PM
I just checked Google images and some of those McMansions are bigger than the ones behind us. With brick too, I don't consider brick houses to be McMansions, too much style. These ones are mostly vinyl with around maybe 3000-3500 sqft
Chris
11-13-2005, 08:50 PM
Well not where I live, but that price isn't inconceivable further out into the suburbs or rural areas.
My parents have a house with around 4000 sq ft, pool, sauna, river, pond, lake (small small lake, for canoes and fish), 7 acres or so. I think its worth around $350k. Its a very rural area, the mail box is 1 mile from the house, but its definitely cheap.

Move to the South East (Georgia, North Carolina) then. For the same price (500k) you can get get a 5,500 square foot 'house'. (In the suburbs that is, in the city the prices slope up pretty quickly).

Chris - I presume your parents are on a well and septic? I've never had to deal with those, so I don't know if they're a pain, more expensive/cheaper, etc.
I have cable Internet right now, but out in the country dish access would probably be the way to go. Seems like WiMax (or whatever technology) is right around the corner.
Chris
11-14-2005, 06:57 AM
Yes Mike, I'm sure they're probably more expensive to put in originally, but as far as maintenance goes, there is next to none.
Mike Hunt
11-14-2005, 02:41 PM
I dunno - I've heard horror stories. Sewage overflowing into the back yard; regular emptying of some tank; wells going dry; water needing to be treated; well pump goes out with the electricity; regular maintenance to keep the septic system "healthy".
A lot of people in the country also use propane too.
Ah, well, can't be that difficult.
Chris
11-14-2005, 06:33 PM
never heard of a well going dry, suppose its possible though
In the city we lose water pressure in a power outage still.
septic can overflow, but its not that big of a deal. Getting it pumped once a year isn't any more expenses than sewer bills in the city.
You do need a water softener though... not sure the cost on that.

Congrats on the award, Chris. Have you ever considered doing a case-study of a particularly successful site of yours (spanning the years, the ups and downs, etc)? If you're already done one, do you have a link for it?

Firstly, Nintendo has won the SitePoint King award. Tom (mmj) has investigated the possibility of foul play in this poll, and after correcting the total votes for this, Nintendo has won the award by a slither!
Foul play? What happened there?
