Well, after nearly 4 years of running websites I have started getting enough spam daily to actually consider doing something to stop, or atleast thin, the amount I get.
My question is simple, what method(s) have worked the best for you and would recommend?

use software like spamassasin...
which mail software are you using? Qmail, Sendmail...
I have started using K9 (http://www.keir.net/k9.html) just recently. Its awesome. You redirect Outlook or whatever to connect to it, then it connects to your email server, and highlights any spam so you can deal with it in Outlook (I just send it all to a spam folder for now).
Highly recommended and free.

I just use the spam filter in Thunderbird. I don't even see it anymore :)

Best way is prevention: Make sure you're email address is no where on the internet in text format. If you want to let people email you put it in a image or do a form. I need to start doing this.

I've gotten more people that I need to worry about spamming my blog than my email; like, some days I'll wake up to a helping of 72 spam comments...
I haven't used any software for reading my emails besides browsers for years. I just consider it way too easy to get a virus otherwise. Sometimes not even having to open the email to get it.
Do you guys find that it's just easier to have a program?

Well, I have a number of email addresses - although I use Gmail a lot (and love it), I like to keep other email seperate, which is why I use Thunderbird.

I think he was talking about stopping spam at the server, but maybe not.

James, I think Wordpress has a blog spam filter plugin.

I use SpamAssasin. It collects a LOAD of spam each day. But I still get about 10 spam mails slipping through into my inbox each day. :(

I was pleasantly suprised with the effectiveness of spam assassin.

Yes, and it works wonders most of the time; however, I can't set it to only tell me when a comment actually makes it PAST the plug-in. So I get every single comment in my email regardless.

spamassassin + dcc + razor + RFC checks + more, and outlook 2003 junk mail folder & custom filters i`ve setup I get only 1-2 spams through a day and this e-mail has been around since 98/99 and is posted on all forums, and on the web all over! I`ve recently started using another e-mail for communication because so man logs, notifications etc get sent to this one!! :)

use this site when linking to your e-mail address directly:

Preferably, you should have a e-mail form submission.

Popfile was the program I was thinking of in an earlier post:
http://popfile.sourceforge.net/
Works very well for pop3 email accounts
