The most common, self-inflicted, causes of broken links are:

-Renaming or moving a webpage and forgetting to change your internal links
-Linking to content (PDFs, videos, etc.) that has been moved or deleted
-Linking to a third party page, and not knowing when they change the URL or move the page

Broken links can be due to:

- Existing webpage is no more active
- The webmaster has removed the link
- There is a 301 redirection of the webpage

There are many possible causes for broken links. Some of the top of my head:

-The user at that address is no longer there (usually happens with school accounts)
-The user deleted the page
-The user is no longer with that ISP
-The ISP is blocking access to a page or an entire site
-The person who wrote the link made a typo on it

Broken links usually created when the website no longer exists or banned. Sometimes even renaming of an url may give you the broken link. But mostly it is a time issue, so make sure to refresh your links.
