You've probably heard of anchor text: the visible, clickable words used to link one page to another. It's the visible part of a hyperlink. Hopefully, you're using anchor text within internal and external links.

Anchor text is the clickable text in a hyperlink. SEO best practices dictate that anchor text be relevant to the page you're linking to, rather than generic text. The blue, underlined anchor text is the most common as it is the web standard, although it is possible to change the color and underlining through html code.

Anchor text diversity refers to the diversity of anchor texts in the links going to your site, typically anchor texts fall into 5 categories:

1. URL (e.g. Example.com)
2. Brand / Company name (e.g. Example Ltd)
3. Keyword rich (e.g. ‘Hotel in France’ or ‘Sports shoes’)
4. Generic (e.g. ‘click here’ or ‘visit website’
5. Image link

Research has shown that having exact keyword matches in SOME anchor texts helps you appear higher in the Google search results, however if you have too many keyword anchors linking to your site, you’re likely to get penalised by their Penguin algorithm for artificial backlinks
