Alt text is used to describe to search engines what the image is showing, allowing search engines to give users better results when performing an image search. ... You should not include keywords if they are not relevant to the image being displayed, and if it doesn't describe the image.

Crawlers could not understand what the image was about. HTML supports the 'alt' attribute in an 'img' tag for the crawlers to understand what the image represents.

Another important aspect is Accessibility. Though most of the internet users can see the images, visually impaired users rely on screen readers to browse the web. These readers inform the user about the image and what it was about by parsing the 'alt' attribute.

Another situation where the alt tag comes in handy is when an Image is not loaded due to some errors with the internet or the server. In such cases, the browsers show a broken image icon with an overlay of the alt text, to help the users understand the context to some extent.

Search engine robots cannot interpret images, therefore, ALT tags provide an opportunity for readability. Alt tags are also beneficial for visitors on browsers that can't process images or on a screen readers' webpage

Search engines, read words not images. Having alt text on your images allows engines like Google to better read the image

Alt image tags serve two very important purposes: Providing access to the visually impaired (who are using a screen-reader) and enabling Search Engines to identify the purpose or content of the image.
