In the US, according to the DMCA, copyright is given at the moment of creation. In otherwords, as soon as the idea becomes a tangible item.
To help protect your copyright you can register it with the copyright office. It takes a bit of time, if I remember right and isn't exactly cheap. I think it is $30 per item.

Also, an item doesn't have to be a tangible item to be copyrighted (a computer file isnt tangible - it's intangible). There are also intellectual property copyright laws etc.

As soon as you create something you own intellectual property rights over it, therefore it is copyrighted to you. Nothing else to do really, as long as you can prove you made it first.

tangible was the wrong choice of words ;) The point I was trying to make was an item becomes copyright "at the moment of creation", according to the DMCA. So once the file exists, it is copyright. Sorry about that.
Intellectuall property is a whole other creature too. Things like KFC's secret recipe fall into this category. Corporate Espionage anyone?
