A cohort is a group of users who share a common characteristic that is identified in this report by an Analytics dimension. For example, all users with the same Acquisition Date belong to the same cohort. The Cohort Analysis report lets you isolate and analyze cohort behavior.

In Google Analytics you can use Cohort analysis to track your users. Basically a cohort is a set of users or visitors who share same characteristics. Cohort analysis breaks users into related groups making it easy to track retention, engagement and how users react to your website/app. You have a choice of tracking your cohorts based on the day, the week or the month they were visited. Based on that you can make future strategies that can boost your profitability.

Cohort analysis is a subset of behavioral analytics that takes the data from a given data set and rather than looking at all users as one unit, it breaks them into related groups for analysis.
