Does any one here have a successful business without advertising for it? Are advertisements necessary for traffic or will search engine traffic do just fine?

The only sites I actually have advertised are my sword site and my coupon site. All the others have all been promoted for free (other than the cost of my time).

Successful can be obtained with quanity and quality.
There you have it, the secret to online business.
I tried advertising a site of mine, but once I'd stopped the campaign not many visitors came back.

It's not just SE traffic though, link exchanges will get you a lot of traffic.

link exchanges? What percentage of traffic does one get using these?
I get quite a lot for my msn emotions site, but obviously it depends on where you link is being placed and what category your site is.

good content is better then any long term advertising, since it results in repeat traffic and word of mouth. Also helps in getting links if you have good content on your site.
I get very little traffic from backlinks, maybe 5%, but it still helps. 50% of my traffic is repeat visitors hitting me from their favorites or direct request. The rest is google pretty much. Yahoo might as well not send me any traffic its so small :P

SEO and advertising are better to be combined together.

Indeed, today the mouth to mouth promotion isnt very effective anymore, advertising is good to *estalbisch* an name out there.

bojhan i disagree. Word of mouth is the #1 source of my traffic.

word of mouth is interesting, because for myself... I dont know anyone that would have anything to do with my sites.
