SAN FRANCISCO - Internet giant Yahoo! Inc. is fortifying its free e-mail service with 25 times more storage and freeing up millions of previously claimed e-mail addresses in an effort to thwart a looming threat from its increasingly disruptive rival Google Inc.

mbb: Even with this I don't see how 100MB is supposed to counter 1000MB. Either way, I still could care less about both Yahoo mail and Google mail. Regardless of storage capacity.

The payed users get 2gigs, thats how. Also they changed the design (though its very broken riht now).

That's not a valid comparison though. Gmail is free, so you'd need to base it off of what Yahoo offers for free. If Google charged for 1GB of space, then Yahoo would win in the paid area, well assuming they offered their 2GB at a cheaper price.

Who the hell is gonna use 1gb of space, Like come "most" of the sites on the net are less that 500mb, and 1gb is nonesense, plus you keep losing track of what you already have in your folder. Though I do like the fact that google is gonna over power many sites that have been on much too long and plus its canadian.

1 thing is that they wont have complete control over the email world until they have like a Gmail Messenger better than msn. MSN is the reason most people are with hotmail.

Exactly. I don't think Yahoo will impress anyone by simply offering more space. The other features that GMail offer make it more interesting and I doubt yahoo will ever be able to match that. They're just not the kind of company to be thinking "out of the box" (at least these days anyway).
Personally, I can't wait for Google to drop DMOZ. Considering Google prides itself on making information accessible, you would have thought they would have their own directory style solution by now, with some nice twist we come to expect from Google, instead of just relying on crippled old DMOZ and its bunch of power hungry meta-editors.
I'd still go with google, for some reason I'm not that keen on yahoo's services :S

Little off-topic but still to do with the Yahoo!/MSN vs Google battle...
Who else thinks it is almost inevitable that Google will release a messanger, personally, I hope they do as I would use it as I am sure many others will.

Personally, I don't think they will. At least, not for a long time. It doesn't really fit with their main business objective to organise and make information accessible.

I think they might email notices to google bar though.
It would be good if they did release a messenger, but I doubt if they will. Or if they do, I don't think they will advertise it much.

I actually use yahoo for sending files between school and work/home as school does not have outlook or another POP3/SMTP program.
