I'm starting to use <td background=""> more, it works in both Mozilla Firefox and IE, looks the same without highlight, but looks alot better with highlight and if the user prints the page they only see text, not the design of the website. I don't use it on photos inside the articles.
What are your views?
I only use it when I have to...

It depends on what I need it for. with design I often use it as a background unless I need to make it a link.
Though a more standards compliant way would be to set it as the background of a div, and not a table cell.

I only use background when I have to. Like, for instance, if i need to put text over an image.
Using an image as a background also takes out the possibility of an alt tag.
Just what I think.

I used tDbackground to do my random feature. I take an image, anysize, and center it in the box. So what that means is when one of my staff add a new feature it automatically goes into the rotation, and image size requires no resizing. It just makes it the background.. and it actually looks cool since it looks different everytime.
I have it set to grab the middle of the pic which is 400pixels wide, and you get a neat looking feature pic, without need of setting up image editing in the admin..... most the time :)
Look at the image at the right for the example, hit refresh couple times
